UMKC Victory - AUG Results

I am pleased to announce that Melbourne University are the 2008 AUG Overall Kendo Champions! After years of coming second overall to University of Sydney in the Kendo competition, Melbourne University was able to take the crown on home soil.

A brilliant day of kendo with excellent perfomances from everyone who competed. The largest AUG kendo competition in history with over 70 competitors (double the average in previous years and larger than the Judo competition!), the standard of kendo displayed has been quoted by all the sensei and seniors present as nothing short of amazing.

A big congratulations and a big thanks to the UMKC team, with many performing better than expected. A big thanks to Andrew Lam, who coached the team to success. A big thanks to the shinpan (referees) who took the time off work to shinpan the matches today. A big thanks to the volunteers who helped with the smooth running of the event. A big thanks to those who came to support us today! The spectator turnout was impressive, the cheering was loud, and some of you even helped out with the scorekeeping, timekeeping, and ribbon-tying! A very big thanks for that (and the seniors and sensei were quite impressed by how easily and quickly you took to those duties)! And finally, a big thanks to Yakov Sensei, who has made us the powerful club that we are!

AUG Kendo Competition, Wednesday!

This week is the Australian University Games week, the "Olympics for Australian Universities", and is a major event on the University's and UMKC's calendar. In 2006 it was held in Adelaide, last year it was on the Gold Coast; this year the City of Melbourne finally has the privilege to host the Games.

The Kendo tournament will be held on Wednesday at Victoria University, Footscray Park Campus - a 15 minute journey from Melbourne Uni. UMKC traditionally performs well at the AUG, dominating the Kyu Team competition, and performing strongly in the Open Team and individual competitions.

UMKC have become known for our large teams and even larger supporter base. We would like to encourage everybody to come and support UMKC on Wednesday; as well as cheering your team on, you will get to watch some of the most intense kendo that Australia has to offer. It will be both enjoyable and a great learning experience. The team needs your support to give it that little bit of extra strength it needs to win, because there are some very very strong teams competing this year!

Victoria University, Footscray Park Campus can be reached by public transport from the city. It lies on Ballarat Road; its map can be found here http://www.vu.edu.au/About_VU/Campus_Maps/Footscray_Park/index.aspx . To reach the venue by train, catch a Williamstown, Werribee or Sydenham train to Footscray Station, then catch a connecting 406 bus to Keilor East, making sure to get off at Vic Uni on the way. Alternatively, catch tram 82 from Footscray Station toward Moonee Ponds until you reach the corner of Droop and Geelong Road, then walk up Geelong Road until you reach the venue.

The event starts at 9am and should end by 4pm. Immediately afterwards many of the interstate kendo clubs will be coming to train with us at UMKC at Melbourne Uni (provided it doesn't go incredibly overtime), so make sure you bring your kendo gear if you want to train after the AUG as well, as you might not have enough time to return home to retrieve your gear.

There is still some hope that the club jackets will be arriving before the event; the small sized jackets have been delayed due to problems on the manufacturer's side. If they do not, please instead wear to the AUG an item of blue clothing (preferably baby blue) to show off your team colours. People who have ordered jackets other than small will be able to collect their jackets from training on Monday.

So, join in the club spirit, cheer and support UMKC on at the AUG, and have a great time! Don't forget to wear blue, and remember: SHINBASH! (the UMKC cheer).

ps. Many of the juniors this year will get to try out for, and indeed be part of, the UMKC AUG team next year - held on the Gold Coast again.

of MENKOTEROCK, Monash Gasshuku, Kyu Gradings, and VKC Payments
A heavy kendo weekend will be coming soon; please read all the contents of this email carefully to be best prepared:

Contents:
1. MEN KOTE ROCK - 5th Sept
2. Monash Gasshuku - 6th Sept
3. Kyu Gradings - 7th Sept
4. VKC Payments

1. MEN KOTE ROCK: the umkc fundraiser - Friday 5th September
The annual UMKC fundraiser is on Friday the 5th of September, 6:30pm - 9:30pm, at Pugg Mahones. Please support your club by buying a ticket to this event and turning up to listen to the great musical talent of UMKC! From J-Pop to Jazz to Green Day covers to post-Indie-New Wave-Electro-Rock, this night will be sure to assail your ears with addictive tunes played by our very own members...and who knows, we might see you on stage in the next few years! The club and its AUG team are relying on your support to thrive and stay the powerful club that it is. Members from all the kendo clubs in Victoria will be attending MEN KOTE ROCK because it is such a big event, and just remember, if Yakov Sensei can reserve some time in his very busy life to attend (and he will attend), then so can you! Tickets are purchaseable at training from any of the committee for $8 in advance, or $10 at the door.

2. Monash Gasshuku (seminar) - Saturday 6th September
The previously postponed Monash Kendo Club seminar has been rescheduled to Saturday the 6th of September. Held at the Caulfield campus, a 30-min drive from the city, you will experience an intensive day of kendo starting from the basics and advancing through to the more advanced jigeiko and shiai. Kendo skills always improve considerably following such seminars, and it is highly recommended you attend to get a heads-up on the grading the next day. Furthermore, the Monash Gasshuku will serve as the first part of the UMKC/MUKC crosstraining programme (UMKC visits Monash, and Monash visits UMKC), so it will be compulsory for all AUG members and very highly encouraged for everyone else, especially juniors. UMKC and Monash are great friends with each other, so let's show our goodwill by attending the Gasshuku!

It runs from 9am - 5pm, and is free of charge. Carpooling will be organized. If you would like to attend, please send me an email or write your name down on the Monash Gasshuku list at training.

3. Kyu Gradings - Sunday 7th September
Although details have yet to be released, it appears that the 6th - 2nd Kyu gradings will be held on Sunday the 7th of September at the Kenshikan. This will the first grading for all juniors who have started this year. All paid-members who have had a reasonable attendance record (judged by Sensei) will be eligible to grade.

If you wish to grade, please print out the grading form attached to the email sent around and fill in all details. Juniors should follow the grading form example as a guide. The grading fee is $30, and you must write down $30 on the grading form. However, you will be paying UMKC $20 and the club will be subsidizing the remainder. ***HAND THE FORM IN BEFORE MONDAY 1ST OF SEPTEMBER (ie next Monday)***.

If for some reason you cannot attend training to hand in your form, you can submit your form into the Kendo postbox located outside the Male Changerooms; it is the 4th from the left, bottom row. Do not put money in the post box! Failing that, please submit to the club all your details as required on the form via email.

Please remember that if you do not pay you will not be allowed to grade.

Full details of the grading will come as soon as the VKR releases it.

4. VKC Payments
All those who competed in the VKC are required to pay $5 per event immediately. Teams were subsidized by the club, so do not count those. Subsidies for accomodation and petrol are currently being considered, and you will be receiving cheques soon.

To get the best UMKC experience, try and attend everything!

Victorian Kendo Championship Highlights
A great performance by all who competed in today's Victorian Kendo Championships, this year held in Ballarat at the East Recreation Centre. The standard of kendo was high and intense, with UMKC providing a strong presence in all divisions.

Congratulations to everyone who competed, especially to:
Andy Meier - 3rd place Kyu Individuals
Masayuki Hasuoka - 2nd place Kyu Individuals
Viet, Kevin H, Alex, Andy, and Masa - 1st place Kyu Teams
Alex Lee - Fighting Spirit award

Thanks also to those who carpooled and also to those who helped shinpan and court duties between matches, which certainly helped what could potentially have been a very long day become quite ok.
